Laser scanning or confocal microscopes scan a sample sequentially point by point, line by line or multiple points at once and assemble the pixel information to one image. As a result optical slices of the specimen are imaged with high contrast and high resolution in x, y and z. These microscopes are intended for use in sensitivity demanding applications in life sciences as well as for topographic tasks on materials surfaces. The BioRad MRC 1024 confocal system is hooked to a Nikon Eclipse E800 upright microscope. It is equipped with a Krypton/Argon mixed gas laser (excitation at 488, 568 and 647 nm), three detector channels, multi-channel data acquisition as well as image acquisition system, computerized control of z-axis motor, filter wheels, PMT gain, gray level and confocal iris.
